The Naval Academy's superintendent has called on Navy football fans to stop tossing candy at midshipmen as they march from the Academy to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

In an October 13th letter to The Capital Newspaper, Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt said: "Candy throwing is simply demeaning to midshipmen. It does nothing to help us win football games."

He also noted, "it's potentially dangerous and it's just a matter of time before a midshipman is struck in the eye. Throwing candy to midshipmen has never been a tradition, and it detracts from the singing, cheering and game-day spirit of the Brigade during march-over." Admiral Rempt said.

"We appreciate our community's great support of the Brigade, but we ask that the candy throwing stop."
